Hunter Bivens is assistant professor in the Literature Department
at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He received his PhD
from the University of Chicago in 2006. He has presented widely on
postwar German literature, film, and culture and published on the
work of Anna Seghers, Brigitte Reimann, and Volker Braun. His
current project, tentatively titled “Expropriated: Spaces and
Affects of East German Literature,” analyzes representations of
space in East German and post-GDR cultural productions, elucidating
the conflicting legacies of both socialist and capitalist models of
industrial modernity.
