Léon-François Hoffmann

Léon-François Hoffmann, Princeton University, Professor of French (Emeritus), specialized in French Romantic literature and Haitian literature and culture. His books include Romantique Espagne (1961); Répertoire géographique de La Comédie humaine (2 vols, 1965 and 1968); Le Nègre romantique: personnage littéraire et obsession collective (1973); Le Roman haïtien, idéologie et structure (1982); Essays on Haitian Literature (1984); Haïti: couleurs, croyances créole (1990); Haïti : lettres et l'être (1992); Littérature d’Haïti) ( 1995); Frédéric Marcelin: Un Haïtien se penche sur son pays (2006); Faustin Soulouque d’Haïti dans l’histoire et la littérature (2007); Haïti: Regards (2009).

He also authored critical editions of Alexandre Dumas père’s novel Georges (1974) and Alphonse de Lamartine’s play Toussaint Louverture (1999), as well as L’essentiel de la grammaire française, which has gone through three editions since 1964.
