Gladstone resigns as British Prime Minister
British Prime Minister William Ewert Gladstone resigns from his post, following a vote of no confidence in his proposed budget. His popularity had already received a blow with the defeat of Charles George Gordon in Khartoum, which many saw as the result of Gladstone's neglect of this military hero.
