Carmen Laforet, one of Spain’s foremost post-war novelists, was born in Barcelona in 1921 and died in Madrid in 2004. Her first novel Nada (1945), which Laforet began writing when she was twenty-two years old, stands as one of the most important works of fiction published in the wake of the Spanish Civil War. The insights into the complexities of the human psyche that are conveyed in this novel suggest that, for such a young writer, Laforet possessed extraordinary powers of perception into the rich strata of conscious and unconscious mental processes.
