François Béroalde de Verville (1556–1626) is primarily known as the author of the infamous novel Le Moyen de parvenir [The Way to Succeed], although the original edition of the book did not display a name of author, a publication date, or publisher. Additionally, Béroalde denied having played any role in writing the infamous text in another one of his works titled Le Palais des curieux [The Palace of the Curious] published in 1612. This explains the reasons for the various erroneous attributions of the Moyen de parvenir through the years. The book was attributed to Henri Estienne, to Matthieu Brouard, aka Béroalde (François’ own father), to Agrippa D’Aubigné (a fellow student of Béroalde and one of his father’s pupils), and to Rabelais himself, amongst many others.
