Gérard Titus-Carmel is one of France’s greatest living writers and artists, living today in Oulchy-le-Château, on the road to Reims. His poetical oeuvre offers some twenty-five powerful collections of rare beauty and intensity, from La Tombée (Falling, 1987) and Le Motif du fleuve (River Motif, 1990) to Ici rien n’est présent (Here Nothing is Present, 2003), Seul tenant (Keeping in One Piece, 2006) and Ressac (Backwash, 2011). His essays on art (Notes d’atelier [Workshop Notes], 1990, for example), other artists (Picasso, Ernst, Caillebotte, Chardin, Munch, Bonnard, Goya, etc.) and poets (Roud, Reverdy, Hart Crane), and questions of beauty and presence (Le Huitième Pli [The Eighth Fold, 2012; Un lieu de ce monde [A Place in the World], 2009), constitute one of the most significant meditations on modern and contemporary culture, comparable today to those of...
