Gherasim Luca, one of the most innovative poets writing in French in the second half of the twentieth century, was a prominent member of the European avant-garde. Luca (whose original name was Salman or Zolman Locker) was born in Bucharest, in 1913, in an Ashkenazi Jewish family. It can be argued that the fact that he grew up in an environment where he spoke Yiddish, Romanian, French and German influenced the way in which his poems were to explore the malleability of language.
