The revolutionary English actor Edmund Kean by some accounts was brought into this world in 1789, the same year that gave birth to the French Revolution. The uncertainty surrounding his birth is partially accounted for by the fact that he was the illegitimate son of a roving actress, Ann Carey, and a father (also named Edmund Kean) who suffered from mental instability and later died by suicide.
During an irregular childhood, Kean was raised primarily by Charlotte Tidswell, who was reputed to be the mistress of his uncle. According to biographers, Tidswell not only beat the boy, but also put him in a dog collar with her name and address on it.
