Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) is best known as the author of Le Petit Prince [The Little Prince, 1943], a whimsical fairy story for children and adults, illustrated with his own drawings. Despite the immense and continuing popularity of this work, Saint-Exupéry's critical reputation rests largely on other works, most of which preceded the publication of the Le Petit Prince, namely l’Aviateur [The Aviator, 1929], Courrier Sud [Southern Mail, 1929], Vol de Nuit [Night Flight, 1931], Terre des Hommes [Wind, Sand and Stars, 1939], Pilote de Guerre [Flight to Arras, 1941] as well as the posthumously published Citadelle [The Wisdom of the Sands, 1948].
