André Philippus Brink was one of South Africa’s most distinguished and prolific writers of Afrikaner origin who achieved an international reputation for his novels. He published 21 novels in Afrikaans and English since the early 1960s and these have been translated into over 30 different languages, attesting to the popularity of his work throughout the world. In addition to his novels, he published three collections of essays on literature (including Mapmakers: Writing in a State of Siege (1983), Reinventing a Continent: Writing and Politics in South Africa (1996) and The Novel: Language and Narrative from Cervantes to Calvino (1998); co-edited a literary anthology with J.
