Francine Noël is a Quebecois writer whose works successfully straddle popular and highbrow literatures. Her literary production, which is dominated by novels, has garnered critical attention from scholars, is cited in literary histories, is included on readings lists in colleges and universities, and is widely reviewed in mainstream media and specialized magazines and journals. Her first novel,
Maryse, is also her most famous one. Published in 1983, it is the first installment of what would become, over the next three decades, a tetralogy.
