Louis Hamelin was born on June 9, 1959 in Proulxville, now a part of Shawinigan in the region of the Mauricie, Quebec, Canada. He has been regularly publishing novels, short-stories, and a few non-fiction books since 1989. Since 2003, he has also been contributing to one of Quebec’s national newspapers,

Le Devoir

, writing mainly about contemporary American literature, but also reporting on Quebec and First Nations literatures. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at McGill University in 1983, but the publication, in 1989, of his first novel

, earned him the Governor General’s Award for French-language fiction and changed his yet to be defined career path.
