Anna Świrszczyńska (also known as Anna Swir) is considered today to be one of the most prominent feminist poets in Polish literature. However, during her lifetime she experienced both highs and lows in her literary career. It seems that Polish literary criticism did not really keep up with her work at the time it was published and it was acknowledged somewhat belatedly. “Unfashionable”, “marginal”, “not at all esteemed”—for a long time Świrszczyńska was repeatedly described in terms of the contradiction between her marginal position and the undeniable greatness of her work. In the 1990s, the renowned Polish poet and Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz tried to reclaim Świrszczyńska’s reputation as a writer by publishing a series of articles about her life and work in…
