Klementyna Tańska-Hoffmanowa (1798–1845) was the first Polish woman writer

and educator to make a living from her creative writing and teaching (“the Polish Miss Edgeworth”, according to the

English Cyclopedia,

449). Her father, Ignacy Tański (1761–1805), was a minor Polish sentimental poet and dramatist and secretary to Prince Adam Czartoryski at Puławy. When Klementyna was three years old, her parents entrusted her upbringing to the ladies of the Szymanowski family, who trained the girl as they thought best. In keeping with contemporary trends in education, the only Polish language she came in contact with during that period was the prayer book. Instead, Klementyna was taught to speak Parisian French.
