Delmore Schwartz

Delmore Schwartz was born in Brooklyn, New York, December 8, 1913, to first generation parents of Romanian Jewish descent. In 1921, the family moved to Washington Heights, at the northern end of Manhattan, but by 1923 the father, Harry Schwartz, had left wife Rose and children Delmore and Kenneth, and moved to Chicago. The family businesses from the immigrant grandparents' generation had been real estate development and insurance, but this became, with Harry Schwartz, primarily a series of ill-defined speculative schemes. Despite the middle-class milieu of the Schwartz home, family life was never stable prior to the father's departure. In 1931-32, Delmore attended the University of Wisconsin, but he returned to New York City and graduate
