Ezra Pound was born in what was still the wild west. His parents, Homer and Isobel, had temporarily settled there because Homer had a government appointment at the Hailey Land Office. The family returned back east when Pound was an infant and he spent his childhood and youth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1898 a wealthy aunt took him on a European tour, giving him an initial encounter with cities and cultures that would figure significantly in his life and work. This Europeanism was given critical and academic rigour by a lengthy period of undergraduate and postgraduate study leading to a master's degree in Romance Languages.
