The East German secret police and the Socialist Unity Party have held significant roles both in Monika Maron’s literary works and in her own life. Born in Berlin as Monika Iglarz in June 1941, she moved with her mother and aunt from West to East Berlin in 1951. The writer experienced a troubled relationship with her stepfather, Karl Maron, who served as head of the People’s Police (Volkspolizei) in the German Democratic Republic and as Minister of the Interior from 1955 to 1963.
