Guilio de' Medici is elected Pope Clement VII, a post he holds until his death in 1534. His skill in diplomacy was not matched by his piety, and he was known as a strikingly worldly Pope. It was under his pontificate that the Sack of Rome was carried out by mutinous troops of Charles V, and Clement was forced to spend six months as a prisoner in the Castel Sant'Angelo.
