In Rome, Pope Clement VII is forced to surrender to the marauding imperialist troops. He agrees to pay an enormous ransom of 400 000 ducats if his life is spared, as well as ceding to the Holy Roman Empire the territories of Parma, Piacenza, Civitavecchia and Modena.
