Philip of Hesse, longstanding leader of the hostile Schmalkaldic League, had recently contracted a bigamous marriage, causing some of his former allies to reject him. As a result, he decided to come to terms with the Emperor Charles V. In the resultant agreement, Philip undertook to recognise the Archduke Ferdinand, Charles' brother, as the next emperor, and agreed to abandon his allies in France and Cleves.
