Hermann von Wied, Archbishop of Cologne, is removed from his see for advocating Protestant ideas. When he formally broke with Rome, the Schmalkaldic League vowed to defend him, but he had little support from his largely Catholic congregation in Cologne, and the joint hostility of the Emperor and Pope against him proved too much.
