Henry II succeeds as King of France on the death of his father, Francis I, ruling until his death in 1559. Under his reign, the persecution of Huguenot Protestants intensified, aided by the passing the Edict of Chateaubriant. Mary Queen of Scots was brought up at his court, and although she had been promised to marry English king Edward VI, a replacement marriage was instead arranged for her with Henry's son Francis.
