Gladstone's British government and Irish nationalist leader Charles Parnell sign the Kilmainham 'treaty', whereby Gladstone makes concessions to the nationalist movement. He grants an amnesty for rent arrears on the condition that Parnell seeks to end the ongoing disorders.
