A new tariff act is passed in the US Congress, introduced by Maine representative Nelson Dingley (Republican), which increases tariff rates - in some cases up to 50% and higher - in the service of a protectionist policy. This counteracts the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act of 1894, which had lowered the rates.
