United under Llewelyn Fawr (Llewelyn the Great) in 1194, the Welsh drove the Anglo-Normans from north Wales in 1212 and captured the key Marcher town of Shrewsbury in 1215. Thereafter they resisted Anglo-Norman attempts to retake their territory until the invasion of 1272.
