The province of Katanga secedes from Zaire inciting a civil war which eventually attracts enough attention to warrant Belgium and UN intervention. The Crisis caused the death of some 100,000 people, led to the assassination of Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, and the seizing of power by Joseph Mobutu.
