Prior to the development of an oral polio vaccine in 1960, 20,000 persons suffered a paralytic disease every year. Jonas Salk was responsible for the development of the injected vaccine whereas Albert Sabin was responsible for the creation of an oral polio vaccine. The Sabin oral vaccine was approved for use in the United States in 1960.
