A figurative use of language which attributes human qualities to ideas or things. For example the morning and the sun in the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam by Edward Fitzgerald:
Awake, for Morning in the bowl of night
Has flung the stone that sets the stars to flight
And Lo! The warrior of the east has caught
The Sultan's turret in a noose of light!
