On the 1st of September, 1983 Korean Air Lines Flight 007, a Korean Air Lines civilian airliner, was shot down by Soviet military aircraft over the Sea of Japan. It had strayed into prohibited Soviet airspace due to a navigational error. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed.
