Historical Context Note

The Fourth Sacred War was declared against the city of Amphissa who was accused of illegal cultivation of sacred land. The conflict gave Philip II of Macedonia, who had been chosen to champion the Amphictionic cause, a new opportunity to lead his troops further into central Greece.
