Republican William Howard Taft (15th September, 1857 - 8th March, 1930) was inaugurated as the 27th President of the United States on the 4th of March, 1909. Taft came into office on a wave of popular support but soon alienated the elements within his party and his predecessor Theodore Roosevelt (27th October, 1858 - 6th January, 1919) broke from the Republicans to found the Progressive or 'Bull Moose' Party. Roosevelt ran for re-election in the 1912 presidential election against Taft. However, the election was easily won by Democrat Woodrow Wilson, with Taft finishing in a dismal third place.
