On the 7th of June, 1776 Virginian statesman Richard Henry Lee (20th January, 1732 - 19th June, 1794) proposed that the United Colonies should be independent of the British Empire. The Lee Resolution was passed on the 2nd of July, and the United States Declaration of Independence was formally declared on the 4th of July, 1776.
