On the death of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, a contest for the next imperial election opens. Charles I of Spain, Maximilian's grandson, and Francis I of France both prepare to stand, spending vast sums of money in Germany to woo their electors. Pope Leo X and Henry VIII of England both pledge support to Francis I.
