Pope Leo X dies, aged 45. He was the son of Lorenzo de' Medici,
ruler of Florence, and his pontificate was marked by his sale of
indulgences to fund the rebuilding of St Peter's basilica, and his
opposition to Martin Luther's 95 Theses.
