Historical Context Note

Francis I signs a fresh alliance with the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I. When this treaty across religious boundaries was first made the previous year, it was viewed in Europe as scandalous and opportunistic; this was a time when the Pope was still calling for the continent's powers to rally together in a crusade against the Turkish 'infidels'.
