Charles IX dies aged 24, and is succeeded as King of France by
his younger brother Henry III. Henry himself is in Poland at the
time, where he has been elected sovereign the previous year, so
Catherine de' Medici, the Queen Mother, acts as Regent until he is
arrives back in France.
