Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II dies in Regensberg while making preparations for an invasion of Poland. His younger brother Rudolf II succeeds him, ruling until 1612. His hostility towards Protestantism and patronage of the Jesuits encourages the Counter-Reformation in Austria.
