As Holy Roman Emperor Matthias's age and ill-health become more obvious, a tussle for the succession to the Empire develops. The Catholics Archdukes Maximilian of the Tyrol and Albert, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, renounce their claims to the Empire in order to support that of hard-line Catholic Ferdinand of Styria.
