Historical Context Note

Montmorency, Governor of Languedoc, is executed for conspiring with Gaston, Duke of Orleans, to bring about the fall of Cardinal Richelieu. Gaston, meanwhile, is pardoned and effects a reconciliation with his brother, Louis XIII.
