Founded in London during 1974, Joint Stock Theatre Company took part in the flowering of the countercultural fringe and alternative theatre that emerged in Britain, Europe, and America in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Initially conceived in 1973 as a sort of “umbrella” producing organisation for its founders Max Stafford-Clark, David Hare and David Aukin, Joint Stock soon created a workshop-based method of text creation in collaboration with playwrights and reorganised itself as a collective.
