George IV has acceded to the throne on the death of his father George III, having already served as Regent for the past decade. When Parliament reopens, his estranged wife Queen Caroline is granted a house and an annuity of £50 000. While George IV is keen to secure a divorce from her, she is notably popular with the radical reforming movement and with the wider public: a petition in her favour gains over a million signatures.
