British prime minister George Canning recognises the
independence of ex-Spanish colonies Buenos Aires, Mexico and
Colombia. In doing so, he partially endorses the Monroe Doctrine of
2nd December 1823, which the United States had introduced to demand
non-interference from European powers in the lands of the western
hemisphere.
