Dom Miguel, uncle to Queen Maria II, takes an oath to take the office of Regent of Portugal. Maria's father Pedro IV, who had chosen to remain in Brazil, had planned for his brother Miguel to marry Maria and serve as Regent for her, but instead Miguel attempts to take power for himself.
