British Prime Minister Robert Peel attempts to conciliate the
Irish via the Maynooth Grant, which rules that a Catholic seminary
at Maynooth will have its funding increased from £9000 per annum to
£26 000. Peel claims that this would produce a better-educated and
more reasonable clergy, but many Protestants are hostile to the
measure, although it does eventually pass.
