France and Italy, both seeking to increase their hold over Tunisia,
begin to conflict with each other in their attempts to enhance
their influence. The French, recently humiliated in the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, see Tunisia, neighbour to their
Algerian colony, as a natural succesor for colonisation.
