Abbas II, Khedive of Egypt, who succeeded to the throne the
previous year at the age of 17, is keen to assert his authority,
and thus dismisses the pro-British ministers. However, British
foreign secretary Lord Roseberry sends him a note informing him
that he must consult the British consul, Lord Cromer, before making
such decisions.
