By the terms of the Treaty of Shimonoseki signed the previous
month by China and Japan, the Chinese agreed to cede the Liaodong
Peninsula to Japan. However, after the diplomatic intervention of
Russia, Germany and France, the two powers sign a revised treaty,
whereby Japan surrenders the peninsula and Port Arthur back to
China in return for a huge indemnity.
