The US presidential election is won by Republican candidate
William McKinley, who has run on a policy platform that advocates
the gold standard. He secures 271 electoral votes, with 176 won by
the joint Democratic-Populist candidate, William Jennings Bryan,
who stands for a policy of free silver coinage.
