In China, Emperor Guangxu initiates a programme known as the
Hundred Days of Reform, guided by political thinker K'ang Yu-wei.
These reforms aimed at creating a country with a modern education
and examination system that could be industrialised and moved
towards a constitutional monarchy and democracy.
