The boundary dispute between Britain and Venezuela over the territory of Guayana Esequiba is concluded. Four years previously, the USA had invoked the Monroe Doctrine, according to which any disputes in the Americas come within the purview of the USA, to insist that they be allowed to arbitrate in the dispute. US President Grover Cleveland had asked Congress to appoint a commission to gather facts on the issue, and now it comes to a conclusion which is largely favourable to Britain.
